China Reportedly Cracking Down on Web-Based Antitrust


The South China Morning Post has reported that 2021 will be the year of antitrust regulations for the State Administration for Market Regulation. The paper reports recent comments from the country’s top markets regulator as a signal of Beijing’s “crackdown on Big Tech’s outsized market power” following its investigation into search giant Alibaba Group Holding, which requires online merchants to choose one platform as their exclusive sales channel. One small example of Alibaba’s power: it owns the South China Morning Post.
